If you’ve ever tried to get kids ready for something that involves sitting still, you know it’s an adventure. But your photo session doesn’t have to feel that way.

At Luminari Photography, we photograph little ones all the time. From toddlers with endless energy to shy preschoolers who take a little warming up, we’ve learned what truly helps them relax and enjoy the process.

Here’s our simple, parent-friendly guide to help your kids (and you) have a great time during your studio session.

Talk About It Ahead of Time

A few days before your session, mention that you’re going to a fun place where someone will take pictures of your family. Keep it light and positive, like you’re talking about an outing or playtime.

Kids do better when they know what’s coming. When they understand the plan, they’re more likely to feel comfortable and excited.

Let Them Help Pick Their Outfit

If they’re old enough, let them choose between two or three options. Giving them a little say helps them feel involved and proud of their choice.

Stick with outfits that are comfortable, soft, and easy to move in. Avoid anything scratchy or stiff so they can focus on having fun instead of fidgeting.

Bring a Comfort Item

A favorite toy, small blanket, or even a snack can make a big difference. Familiar things help kids relax in a new environment.

Sometimes those little details even end up in the photos, and they become beautiful reminders of this stage in their life.

Plan Around Their Best Time of Day

We’ll help you schedule your session at the time your child is happiest. For many families, that’s morning after breakfast or right after nap time.

We don’t expect kids to sit perfectly still or smile on command. In fact, we encourage movement. We’ll play, laugh, and follow their lead to bring out their real personalities.

Kids take cues from us. If you’re calm and smiling, they’ll feel safe and open up more easily.
