A Korean Dohl Portrait Session in Orlando

Recently, we had the honor of photographing a Dohl celebration in our Winter Garden studio, serving families throughout Orlando and surrounding communities. From traditional Hanbok to the symbolic Doljabi objects, every detail reflected heritage and family identity.

The Meaning Behind the Dohl

The Dohl, also known as Doljanchi (돌잔치), celebrates a child’s first year of life. Historically, reaching one year was a significant milestone. Families gathered to express gratitude and pray for a long and prosperous future.

One of the most meaningful traditions is the Doljabi ceremony. The child is presented with symbolic objects, each representing a possible life path.

In this session, the objects included a stethoscope, wooden tools, thread, and a keyboard, representing aspirations of health, craftsmanship, longevity, and knowledge. Watching her curious little hands reach forward brought both laughter and reflection to the room.

Capturing the Doljabi Moment

In one portrait, she leaned forward in her vibrant red and yellow Hanbok, small hands confidently pressing on the keyboard. The movement felt spontaneous and full of personality.

In another frame, she grasped the thread, her expression focused and determined. These are the quiet moments that turn tradition into story.

Studio lighting allowed us to preserve the richness of her Hanbok, from the bold red skirt to the multicolored sleeves, without distraction. The clean background kept the focus on her expression and the symbolic objects before her.

Styling the Celebration Table

For the formal portraits, the celebration table was thoughtfully styled with florals, fruit, rice cakes, and candles. The arrangement honored tradition while maintaining a refined, timeless look.

The deep brown backdrop elevated the vibrant colors of her Hanbok and the decorative details. Grapes, rice bowls, wooden toys, and traditional rope elements added texture without overwhelming the scene.

When she raised both hands in excitement, surrounded by meaningful objects and florals, the image captured both celebration and innocence in a single frame.
